tart and sweet
flavor and stain
a round mound
of crushed ice
packed into
a paper cone
on a
hot
summer
day
macerated,
fill and sweeten
a layer between
white wedding cakes,
the top tier saved for
that first year
anniversary
shared
two weeks later
after the honeymoon
because it was
so
darn
good
why save it?
two fresh ones
kerplunk!
into a sink full
of dirty
dishwater
escaping the
dysfunctional
sieve of a
hand
while another plops
their neighbors
into
a
waiting
mouth
I love how you’re modeling other ways to play with your mentor text from last week. Now I’m even more inspired! I love the “round mound” from the first stanza–that rhyme gives it such a lightheartedness that reflects the joy of that treat!
I originally wrote about a slice of wedding cake that I added after the orange slices stanza from last week’s poem. It just wasn’t working for that poem, but I liked it for “some day.” I went back to read the section I had saved, reworked it and changed the topic. It fit better with raspberries than slices.
Oh raspberries, my absolute favourite fruit! Love the layers of thought from wedding cakes to dropping into dirty dishwater… vivid pictures! That first stanza, you can really taste their delicious flavours.
This was a quick response to a prompt from a book about memories I had been reading. One word, write memories of that word. I almost got stuck with this one, until I remembered the delicious filling of our wedding cake.
Thank you, Terje. I have never had fresh, wild raspberries, only the ones from the grocery store. I’m sure they’re so much better, rapberrier, than the ones I buy.
Love this line..
escaping the
dysfunctional
sieve of a
hand
I can relate!

Hi Jill. It was one of those last few raspberries I rinsed under running water, and oh no, they started escaping! Glad I was able to save the others.

Such a good poem. Raspberries are my favourite berries. The first fresh wild raspberries of the summer taste the best.
